NFL Draft

Draft Profile: Ohio St RB Mike Weber – Phong Ta

by Phong Ta

Mike Weber

5’9, 215, Junior

2018 stats(13 Gms):

Rushing: 172 carries, 954 rushing yards, 5 TDs

Reveiving: 21 receptions, 112 receiving yards, 1 TD

Strengths

Balance – Takes contact well regardless of defender’s tackle placement, while maintaining forward progress.

Short Yardage Ability – His stockier build should prove useful in picking up big yards in short yardage situation as he naturally falls forward, although coaches at the next level will need to teach him to lower his shoulders and go at defenders more often.

Team Player/Effort – Is a high motor player who didn’t complain at all even after losing lead RB status. Isn’t afraid to be physical or go for extra yardage.

Weaknesses:

Speed – Lacks a 2nd gear to really pull away from defenders at the second level, which will limit his big-play ability.

Lateral Movement – Weber’s lower body movements moving side-to-side seem very stiff, which will likely expose itself in pass protection at the NFL level.

Summary:

A likely Day 3 draft pick, Weber should prove a useful depth piece in the future. Though he lacks any outstanding traits, he has no particular red flags either. Will likely be a solid, if somewhat limited 3rd RB in a rotation who can do a bit of receiving out of the backfield as well.
